Follow Me on Twitter — Jasmine L Thomas, M. Ed.

For the past three months, I have been on a journey to expand my brand across all major social media platforms. The one I could not wrap my head around most was Twitter. I mean, why in the world would I use it anyway? If you haven’t noticed, I have a lot to say. A tweet is way too short for me, until I figured out how to create a thread, which I will mention later in this article.

But after playing around with it for 28 days, I believe I have had some momentous gains, 30K impressions. It’s important for you to know that impressions are the amount of times someone came into contact with your tweet. The higher the number, the more likely people are going to click on your profile to see who you are. This can lead to new clients and even paid opportunities for brand sponsorships. Who wouldn’t want this free exposure? So I decided to share my findings with you:

  1. Decide why you are on Twitter.

There are only a three reasons why you should be on any major platform — to inspire, educate, or entertain. Of course, you may find yourself doing two of these at the same time, but you cannot do all three and expect to be a respected brand. For me, I focus on inspiring people to lead them into educating themselves. I post quotes for fuel to my audience, but then I use different links that push them to educate themselves in areas that align with my brand on Twitter. This takes them to courses, books, and videos that are digestible and relatable to what they need to thrive.

When you are shooting for inspiration, you want to make sure you know exactly what will motivate their audience, as well as their pain points. You want to be that go to profile on Twitter that will light them up in their darkest hour.

Educating on Twitter is easier than people think. The key is to always show up as the expert. Let people see your face by doing quick forty-five second videos. They will fall in love with your words and use it to apply for growth.

Now, entertaining is not my forte as a mindset and business coach, but there are plenty of people who make funny videos. They even post hilarious memes that have people retweeting for days.

Know your reason, and stick to it. If you don’t choose between one to two of those reasons, you will not appeal to anyone at all. Being specific on any social media platform matters.

2. Make your first impression count.

Your brand says everything, especially when people visit your profile. They want to know who they are viewing, how they can help them, and why they should follow them. Give them a good reason to stick around!

  • Your bio should tell them how you can help them. For example, mine reads “I help millennial women increase their self-worth to up level their net worth”. This is clear and concise. That means I am focused on a specific target client and what results I provide to them. Plus, I include a mini call to action to get them to click on my link — “Ready to upgrade? Click here now!”. This ensures that my link is connecting them more to me. They are having the opportunity to see what I am all about. People have to encounter your products and services at least seven times to buy from you. Let one of those extra times be when they first view your profile.
  • Your pinned tweet needs to give them and introduction of the help you provide. My pinned tweet right now focuses on me actually helping my followers. I tell them the importance of letting go and how to do it. In addition, I mandate a call to action for them requesting they reply back to the tweet sharing what they are choosing to let go of. I want them to be engaged with me, while seeing that I am the expert in the mindset and business coaching.
  • Your profile picture should tell who you are without any words. Let your picture speak for itself, as it aligns to your online brand. If you want people to believe you are powerful, ensure the colors and tones line up with that. That is my specific desire on Twitter, so I have a picture of me in my favorite burgundy dress. My followers know I’m all about business and making things happen. Be sure your audience knows who you are as well.

3. Tweet at least three times per day.

Yeah, you are going to have to tweet. And it shouldn’t just be anything. Ensure it is something people can relate to. Truthfully, I tweet whatever is on my heart. Although I have some tweets automated, I like to get in there and share the quotes that have helped me throughout the day. Typically, I get a greater response with those heartfelt quotes than the automated ones.

Be sure to give advice or tips to your followers. If it is a lot, then use a thread. This thread can be used by hitting the new tweet button after making one tweet that is appearing individually on the screen. It will allow people to dig deep into what you are saying and allow you more exposure with the variety of tweets.

Something else that is cool is asking your audience a question. People will love to answer and talk back to you. Be sure that the question is open-ended, so people can offer a variety of opinions. You’ll be surprised to know what your audience thinks. They will wind up telling you what they want from you. Yep, this is market research at its finest.

4. Tag someone you admire.

Not going to lie, this one was hard for me at first. I didn’t want to seem like the thirsty follower who always wanted a celebrity’s attention. But the truth is that everyone on Twitter is a human being just like we are. They need us to make them relevant, just like we want our followers to make us relevant in the online space. Don’t put them on a pedestal.

Be open to sharing a quote or a piece of their work and tag them. You never know, they may actually retweet, reply, or like your quote. This will show others who you are, and it will make them want to connect with you. The first thing they’ll think is “how does this person know them?”. It’ll look like you have connections, which is always good for your brand.

5. Reply back to a thread that aligns to your brand.

This is by far one of the best things you can do to increase your impressions. But you have to be careful that what is being said on the tweet goes along with what you do. For me, it’s quite a bit easier because I am a mindset and business coach. The people I follow are always sending out tips, quotes, or advice, so it’s simple for me to catch a few of their good tweets. All I do is just respond with something simple to interact with them. Other people can like, retweet, or reply to your response to generate a conversation. This leads you to more influence online and allows you to show up as the expert once more.
